First of all regarding the quality of the Forgotten Books edition of this work It has the typical photocopied look to it with horribly-reproduced photos and art-work, which let's be honest, is a huge part of the charm of these 19th century books on exploration. Furthermore, the original work (or quality reprints at least) contains maps regarding the progress of the author on his travels which would make the reading more interesting to follow. Nontheless, at least there were no missing pages in this work as I have noticed in other forgetten-books titles....
Now as for the book itself it is a book of the explorations of an American physician starting from Berbera in Somalia, through southeastern ethiopia and all the way to Lake Turkana (formerly Rudolf) and on southward to the Kenyan coast in the years 1895-1896. Such a journey had never before been accomplished and the author encounter many adventures along the way including attacks by numerous tribes, wild animal encounters and near death from sickness, starvation and thirst. Overall a fun, if sometimes monotonous, read. Reccommend reading in conjunction with other contemporanous works regarding the same region which include "Elephant Hunting in East Africa" by Alfred Neumann, who was at lake Turkana the exact same time as this author, as well as "Among Swamps and Giants in East Equatorial Africa" by Austin, who 4 years later came down to L Turkana from the Sudan in the North.
